FinTech Dream Jobs: Is the Recruitment of Iraqi Talent Real or Just False Advertising?

Every week, job advertisements appear offering attractive salaries at FinTech companies for positions such as data engineer, cybersecurity analyst, and digital marketing specialist. Thousands of young Iraqis compete for these opportunities, but the reality often differs from what the advertisements promise.

FinTech companies in Iraq face a genuine challenge: the pool of Iraqi talent remains limited in highly specialized fields such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. As a result, companies may either lower their hiring requirements or recruit foreign specialists at significantly higher salaries. Meanwhile, Iraqi employees who secure these positions may struggle with limited access to meaningful training and long-term professional development.

Another major concern is job stability. In an environment marked by political and economic uncertainty, FinTech startups can suddenly shut down their operations. Three FinTech companies reportedly ceased operations in 2025, leaving around 200 employees without jobs.

The question, therefore, is whether Iraq's growing FinTech sector can create sustainable career opportunities for local talent—or whether the industry's promising job advertisements are masking a much more uncertain employment reality.
