Farewell to Cash: Iraqi Government Institutions Complete Their First Year of Comprehensive Digital Transformation
Governmental and financial circles in Baghdad have marked the completion of the first year since the full implementation of the nationwide ban on cash transactions across all government institutions and public entities, which officially came into effect in July 2025.
According to reports issued by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers in July 2026, the adoption rate of electronic payments for government fees and revenue collection has reached 98%, reflecting significant progress in Iraq's digital transformation agenda.
A senior official at the Ministry of Finance stated that "this transformation has not only accelerated government transactions but has also significantly reduced administrative and financial corruption, as every dinar entering the state treasury is now electronically monitored."
Citizens have also expressed broad satisfaction following the elimination of long queues for manual cash payments, although some minor technical challenges remain, particularly in updating payment systems in several remote provinces.
